Curieusement le ciel est bien menaçant et il crachine déjà. Confronté à cette météo variable, Jean-Luc propose soit de suivre le trajet initial par le col des Méandes (2727 m), soit de descendre directement sur le refuge. Nous choisissons le passage par le col. Ce crachin ne nous intimidera pas !</ins></div></td></tr>

Toute la matinée, nous avons traversé une succession de croupes et de combes tantôt verdoyantes tantôt plus minérales pour ce que nos capuches et le rideau de grêle nous laissaient entrevoir. Le brouillard s’invite et l’angoisse grandit à l’idée de se perdre. Nous avançons comme les moutons, dans les pieds les uns des autres pour ne pas perdre une ouaille. Quelques glissades sur les fesses, sans conséquence émaillent le parcours. Les doigts engourdis de froid ne tiennent pas les cartes. L’eau se glisse insidieusement dans la moindre couture non étanche, détrempe les chaussures, remonte le long des pantalons. Quelle jouissance! Thabor et Rois Mages sensés surplomber notre chemin, où êtes-vous ? Beaucoup de regrets car ce parcours par beau temps doit être superbe ! </ins></div></td></tr>

Encore 450 mètres de descente jusqu’au refuge. La pluie se calme légèrement et quelle récompense de voir bondir des chamois sur une pente, si près de nous ! Le chemin plonge dans un bois de mélèzes traversé par le ruisseau pétulant de la Vallée Étroite. La vie réapparaît : les troupeaux de vaches, les familles en promenade, la maison des chamois (2090 m), les refuges et quelques maisons. </ins></div></td></tr>

Bien à l’abri et au chaud, nous quittons chaussures et vêtements trempés en espérant qu’ils soient secs pour le lendemain. La partie supérieure française est rattachée à la commune de Névache dans la vallée de la Clarée. Le col de l’Échelle relie les deux vallées. Nous sommes donc dans une enclave française en Italie. Le col de la Vallée Étroite (2434 m) est un passage entre les Hautes Alpes et la Savoie, dans la vallée de la Maurienne.</ins></div></td></tr>

Nous compatissons à la misère de ces pauvres randonneurs qui courent pour vite se mettre à l’abri. Un orage impressionnant éclate pendant le dîner, embrasant le village et la combe, fouettant la verrière dont on craint qu’elle n’explose. Excellent repas italien composé des anti pastis, d’une Concha (polenta chaude sur un fromage à fondue qui accompagnent des saucisses à la sauce tomate), d’un tiramisu, de vin, de tisane et de génépi. Repas dense.</ins></div></td></tr>
